Ness thermostat is one of those products which have mesmerized me since the day I first saw them. There slick design and intuitive user interface made boring household product look cool and brought them to the internet age. Google acquisition of Ness is proof of what is to come- a age in which boundaries between hardware and digital will blur to almost nil.

Though this acquisition is good for many reasons; it is also very worrying. Google (and now, as we know with the NSA linked documents, also the government) will not only have access to our intimate digital footprints but also to our real life behavior and preferences. Paradoxically internet the symbol for modern day transparency and knowledge, is now into a web of secrecy and ignorance. This needs change for world to realize true potential of internet.
